Global electric vehicle (EV) sales surged in October, rising 23% year-on-year to 1.9 million units, according to British consultancy RhoMotion. The increase was driven by strong demand in China and Europe, offsetting a steep decline in North America.
In Europe, sales jumped 36% to 372,780 vehicles, fueled by demand in Germany, France, and the United Kingdom.
China, the world’s largest car market, recorded around 1.3 million EV and plug-in hybrid sales — more than half of the global total.
Meanwhile, sales in North America dropped 41% to 100,370 units, mainly due to the expiration of the $7,500 U.S. tax credit for electric vehicles.
