Kuwait Announces Recruitment Drive for Expat Teachers

Kuwait City, Kuwait: The Kuwaiti Ministry of Education is actively seeking qualified non-Kuwaiti teachers to fill staffing gaps for the upcoming academic year. This initiative complements the Ministry’s ongoing efforts to prioritize the hiring of Kuwaiti educators.

Addressing Staffing Shortages

Acting Undersecretary Matrook Al-Mutairi has initiated a recruitment drive aimed at attracting both returning expatriate teachers with established contracts and new hires possessing specialized expertise. The Ministry seeks candidates for three-year terms, subject to approval by the Civil Service Commission. This targeted recruitment effort aims to address a current shortage of approximately 1,600 teachers.

Challenges and Solutions

While the Ministry has received over 2,000 electronic applications, meeting the full staffing requirement presents certain challenges. Some applicants haven’t cleared the interview process, while others face hurdles related to Civil Service Commission regulations. Particularly in cases where qualified Kuwaiti applicants with similar specializations are available.

The Ministry acknowledges the need to address logistical complexities associated with external teacher contracting. Also previously planned recruitment of Palestinian teachers. Efforts are underway to collaborate with the Palestinian embassy and explore alternative recruitment channels through Jordan, such as facilitating travel logistics.

Commitment to Long-Term Goals

The Ministry of Education remains committed to its Kuwaitization plan. It aims to achieve a balanced distribution of Kuwaiti and non-Kuwaiti teachers in the school system. The current ratio of 72% Kuwaiti teachers to 28% non-Kuwaiti teachers aligns with established annual targets for increasing the number of Kuwaiti educators.

Looking Forward

As preparations for the next academic year continue, the Ministry is conducting assessments to determine the specific needs of schools in residential areas. While local recruitment remains the primary focus, the Ministry acknowledges the possibility of adjusting its approach to ensure adequate staffing levels for all students.
