Kuwaiti Fish Market Reels from Price Surge Amidst Supply Shortages
Kuwait City, Kuwait: The Kuwaiti fish market is experiencing a significant price increase, particularly for popular local varieties. The cost of Zubaidi, a highly sought-after fish, has reached 20 Kuwaiti dinars (USD $66) per kilogram, with large baskets exceeding 100 dinars ($330).

This surge is attributed to a combination of factors. Seasonal fishing restrictions and warnings issued to fishermen regarding potential territorial disputes with neighboring countries have resulted in a decline in the supply of local fish. While imported options from Iran and Pakistan are available, they do not fully address the consumer preference for fresh, local catches.
Market vendors and customers alike have expressed concern over the rising prices. Many hope for a price correction in the coming days to ensure continued affordability. However, some anticipate further price increases with the arrival of summer, a period typically characterized by heightened demand for seafood.
The market currently offers a variety of imported fish alongside the limited local supply. Imported shrimp, though not a substitute for the currently banned Kuwaiti shrimp, are available at approximately 4 dinars ($13) per kilogram. Prices for other local favorites like grouper, balol, bayfish, Nubee, oyster, kingfish, and seabream range from 3 to 6 dinars ($10 to $20) per kilogram. Consumers can expect some relief by June 1st, when the ban on catching mead fish is lifted, reported Arab Times.
