Kuwait Plans Four Solar Power Plants to Tackle Electricity Shortage

In a strategic move to address the growing electricity demands and reduce reliance on conventional energy sources, the Ministry of Electricity, Water, and Renewable Energy is currently evaluating a proposal to establish four large-scale solar power plants with a combined capacity of 2,000 megawatts. This initiative aligns with the country’s goal to raise the share of renewable energy in the national grid to 15% by 2030.Stay updated on Kuwait’s latest news and job openings by following our WhatsApp channel!https://whatsapp.com/channel/0029VaCkXo25q08jnKrRwo27

According to ministry insiders, this project—if approved—could serve as a critical lifeline to Kuwait’s electricity sector, which has been grappling with power shortages since last year. The proposed plants are expected to be operational before the summer of 2026, offering relief from the seasonal strain on the grid for the next three summer cycles.

Sources emphasized that fast-tracking solar project tenders and contract awards represents the ministry’s most viable solution for resolving the ongoing power crisis. Unlike traditional fossil-fuel power plants that require three to four years to complete, solar energy projects can be developed and commissioned within a year, enabling a rapid response to the country’s immediate energy needs.

His Excellency Dr. Subaih Al-Mukhaizeem, Minister of Electricity, Water, and Renewable Energy, is reportedly giving top priority to solutions that can be implemented in the short term to avert scheduled outages. The ministry is particularly focused on achieving a record-breaking timeline for the proposed solar plants to ensure grid stability during peak demand periods.

Additionally, the ministry has not ruled out the temporary use of power generation vessels to supplement the national grid. A comprehensive technical and financial feasibility study is underway to determine whether this option could complement the ministry’s broader energy strategy.

This initiative reflects Kuwait’s continued efforts to diversify its energy mix, optimize grid capacity, and strengthen energy security amid rising consumption and climate challenges.
