Arabic language curriculum in Kuwait-The Ministry of Education has developed a new Arabic language curriculum for the 2025–2026 academic year, covering grades one through nine. The updated program places special emphasis on the primary grades, introducing intersecting letter techniques, strengthening writing and reading skills, and dedicating lessons to Naskh script practice.
An educational source told Al-Rai that the aim of these updates is to improve students’ language abilities, correct their writing, and help them master proper pronunciation of letters with short sounds.
The source explained that the Technical Guidance Department is currently revising class schedules across all subjects to accommodate a new elementary-level course, the “My Country” book. However, the number of lessons allocated to Arabic will remain unchanged.
Regarding academic content, the updated curriculum introduces a balanced selection of poetic texts across different stages:
- Primary level: a light poem from classic Arabic literature.
- Intermediate level: a mix of poems from the pre-Islamic, Abbasid, and modern eras.
The previous system of assigning separate activities for each skill has been replaced. Under the new framework, a single lesson now incorporates multiple skills, all linked to a unifying text—such as a Qur’anic verse, hadith, poetic excerpt, or prose passage.
Looking ahead, the source confirmed that at the start of the new school year, fourth-grade students will be prepared to participate in the PIRLS International Reading Assessment in March. This global test measures reading comprehension and literacy levels. Results will be published shortly after, and the Ministry hopes they will reflect positively on the newly developed curriculum. The source emphasized that it is important to allow sufficient time for the program’s implementation before making judgments, so that its strengths and areas for improvement can be accurately assessed.
