Kuwait Secures 900 Megawatts from Gulf Grid to Meet Summer Power Demand

In a recent coordination meeting held in Kuwait, the Ministry of Electricity, Water, and Renewable Energy discussed the import and procurement of electricity from GCC Interconnection Authority countries to help meet growing power demands during the summer season.

Sources confirmed that the ministry has finalized an agreement to purchase 900 megawatts from the Gulf power grid for the month of May, with the supply expected to continue through September. While the ministry hopes to secure additional quantities, this will depend on the availability of surplus supply among GCC countries.Stay updated on Kuwait’s latest news and job openings by following our WhatsApp channel!https://whatsapp.com/channel/0029VaCkXo25q08jnKrRwo27

Meanwhile, the ministry is intensifying maintenance efforts on power generation units to ensure they return to operation before June, when temperatures are expected to soar close to 50°C.

To further strengthen electricity and water production capacity, the Central Agency for Public Tenders has announced two major projects for competitive bidding.

One of the key tenders involves the supply, installation, operation, and maintenance of gas turbine units with a combined cycle system at the Sabiya Power Plant (Phase IV), with a total capacity of 900 megawatts. The deadline for submitting bids is set for May 27 — just one month from the tender’s announcement date. Ministry sources highlighted the urgency of the project, noting that Minister Dr. Subaih Al-Mukhaizeem is committed to fast-tracking the process to avoid delays, especially since the current tender documents remain largely unchanged from a previously cancelled version.

Additionally, the Authority announced a tender for Phase II of the Doha Seawater Reverse Osmosis Desalination Plant. The project includes the supply, installation, operation, and maintenance of desalination units capable of producing 60 million imperial gallons per day, along with alkalinity-enhancing equipment. This project also carries a one-month submission deadline, with the goal of bolstering Kuwait’s water production capacity.

Both projects are considered strategic to ensure energy and water security during the high-demand summer months and beyond.
