Kuwait’s Population Crosses 5 Million Mark

Kuwait’s population has grown to 5.098 million people by the end of June this year, according to the latest data from the Public Authority for Civil Information.

Out of the total population, 30% (1.55 million) are Kuwaiti citizens, and the rest are expatriates. The report also says:

  • 17% of the population is under 15 years old.
  • 80% are between 15 and 64 years old.
  • Only 3% are over 65 years old.

Largest Communities

The Indian community is the biggest in Kuwait, making up 29% of the population (about 1.036 million people). Egyptians come next with 661,318 people, about 19% of the population. In total, 3.547 million people in Kuwait are non-citizens.

Gender and Age

Kuwait has more men than women:

  • 61% are men (3.09 million)
  • 39% are women (2 million)

The biggest age group is 35–39 years, which makes up 13% of the population.

Family Types

Most people (about 79%) live in private families, while 21% live in collective households. The number of Kuwaitis living in private families increased slightly by 21,775 last year.


Jobs and Workers

About 2.283 million people in Kuwait have jobs:

  • 519,989 work in government jobs.
  • 1.763 million work in private companies.
    This means 45% of the population is working.

Among Kuwaitis:

  • 32% of men are in the workforce.
  • 50% of Kuwaiti workers are women (31% working, 37% not working).

In the government sector, the largest foreign worker groups are:

  • Egyptians (7.2%)
  • Indians (4.51%)
    Kuwaitis make up the majority, with 75.57% of all government jobs.

In the private sector:

  • Indians lead with 31.2%
  • Egyptians follow with 24.8%
  • Only 3.8% of workers are Kuwaitis.

Domestic Workers

There are 822,794 domestic workers in Kuwait. Most of them (about 58.2%) are women. Domestic workers make up:

  • 26% of the total workforce
  • 16% of the total population

Top nationalities among domestic workers:

  • Indians – 41.3%
  • Filipinos – 17.9%
  • Sri Lankans – 17.6%

Marital Status in Kuwait

  • 2.309 million people are married.
  • 1.697 million are not married.
  • 124,965 are divorced.
  • 47,517 are widows.

Among women, Kuwaiti citizens are twice as likely to be divorced compared to non-Kuwaiti women. There are:

  • 55,400 divorced Kuwaiti women
  • 25,315 divorced non-Kuwaiti women
