Minister of State for Municipal Affairs and Housing Affairs, Abdul Latif Al-Mashari, has approved a major update to the street naming system Kuwait. A total of 591 main and secondary streets will now be identified by numbers instead of names, while 66 streets will retain their existing names, and 3 streets will have their names updated.

The decision follows a Municipal Council meeting on October 19, where the Committee for Naming Cities, Suburbs, Districts, Streets, and Squares reviewed and approved the proposal. This move is in line with Cabinet Resolution No. 666 (Meeting No. 19/2025) and aims to standardize and simplify the street naming system Kuwait-wide.

Under the new rules, cities, suburbs, and districts cannot be named after individuals, except for those who have served as Emir or Crown Prince of Kuwait. Streets and public spaces may only be named after Kuwaiti rulers, kings, sultans, heads of state from friendly countries, historical figures, or certain members of the ruling family.Stay updated on Kuwait’s latest news and job openings by following our WhatsApp channel!https://whatsapp.com/channel/0029VaCkXo25q08jnKrRwo27

Names based on countries, cities, and capitals will continue to be allowed, following the principle of reciprocity. Some existing streets not named after individuals will keep their names, but moving forward, most new roads and streets in Kuwait will be numbered rather than named, ensuring a more organized and efficient street naming system Kuwait.
