Kuwait City | November 10, 2025 – Minister of Health Dr. Ahmed Al-Awadhi confirmed that the National Bank of Kuwait Hospital expansion represents a shining example of effective cooperation between the government and the private sector to strengthen Kuwait’s healthcare system.
Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony for the third expansion phase of the NBK Specialized Children’s Hospital in the Sabah Specialized Medical Area, Dr. Al-Awadhi said that the project reflects the ongoing partnership between the Ministry of Health and the National Bank of Kuwait (NBK) in supporting national healthcare development.
Modern Facility Built to International Standards
The National Bank of Kuwait Hospital expansion is being constructed according to the latest global medical standards, featuring five floors and 66 new beds in intensive care units and private rooms. It will also include accident and laboratory departments, designed to ensure infection control and create a child-friendly environment that addresses both psychological and health needs.
Dr. Al-Awadhi noted that the project integrates environmental and humanitarian elements, making it a model for modern pediatric hospitals. He expressed appreciation for the NBK’s charitable contributions and continued support of national health initiatives, calling this expansion a major step forward in the treatment of blood diseases, cancer, and stem cell transplantation for children.
NBK’s Ongoing Commitment to the Health Sector
NBK Group CEO Issam Al-Saqer emphasized that the bank’s partnership with the Ministry of Health dates back to 1996, when Building A was established to treat childhood blood diseases and cancer, followed by Building B, dedicated to stem cell treatment.
He added that the new NBK Hospital expansion covers 8,000 square meters with a total construction area of 22,000 square meters. The facility has been designed according to international medical standards and has won an award from the University of Michigan for its outstanding environmental design and psychological suitability for children.
Al-Saqer commended the joint efforts of engineers from both the Ministry of Health and NBK, stating that the project fulfills the growing treatment needs of children in Kuwait and reflects the bank’s long-term commitment to supporting humanitarian and healthcare projects.
Leading Center for Childhood Cancer and Stem Cell Treatment
Dr. Sundus Al-Shuraida, Head of the Department of Hematology, Pediatric Oncology, and Stem Cell Transplantation at the hospital, said that the hospital diagnoses over 100 new childhood cancer cases annually, including 50 to 60 leukemia cases. Each year, the hospital follows up with 160 to 180 patients and performs around 80 successful stem cell transplants, achieving a 97% success rate, among the highest in the region.
The department currently has 42 specialized doctors and provides 24-hour medical care to around 2,500 patients annually, conducting over 11,000 treatment sessions including transfusions, chemotherapy, and other advanced procedures.
Dr. Al-Shuraida announced that the hospital will participate in the World Congress of Hematology in the United States this December to present a study on a new treatment technique, “Mofet Therapy,” for stem cell transplantation complications.
Globally accredited, the NBK Specialized Children’s Hospital holds an international registration number among reference centers for treating blood diseases and childhood cancer, underscoring Kuwait’s growing leadership in specialized healthcare.
