Kuwait’s East and Fahaheel markets received more than 273 tons of shrimp and 300 tons of fish in August, totaling 573 tons, according to Barak Al-Subaie, Secretary-General of the Kuwaiti Fishermen’s Union. He confirmed that the shrimp fishing season in economic waters has been highly successful, helping increase supply and reduce local fish prices.
In a press statement, Al-Subaie stressed the need to regulate the fishing sector and reopen fishing areas in Kuwait Bay, noting that many tarrid boat owners have been negatively affected by existing restrictions. He welcomed the recent decision by the Agriculture Authority to increase the length of tarrid boats to 12 meters, which has improved fishing operations.
Al-Subaie explained that tarrids, which make up nearly half of Kuwait’s fishing fleet, play a vital role in catching both surface-swimming and bottom-dwelling fish. He also highlighted the importance of reviewing fishing zones, as migratory fish often leave local waters and return as imports if not harvested in time.
He expressed gratitude to government agencies for their support of the fishing sector and reaffirmed fishermen’s commitment to strengthening Kuwait’s marine food security, preserving the marine environment, and supporting the country’s vision for sustainable development.
