In a move to strengthen awareness and protect the marine environment, the Environment Public Authority has reiterated penalties for the intentional pollution of seawater.
The authority stated that Article 68 of the Environmental Protection Law mandates that anyone who deliberately pollutes marine areas with harmful substances—regardless of their source, quantity, or type—can face serious consequences. This includes pollution from:
- Oil and its derivatives
- Toxic liquids and hazardous waste
- Untreated sewage
- Chemicals and radioactive materials
- Harmful energy
Offenders may be subject to imprisonment for up to 6 months, a fine of up to 200,000 Kuwaiti dinars, or both.
The law applies to all marine zones, including the internal waters of Kuwait, the territorial sea, areas adjacent to the territorial sea, and other nearby waters.
