Rare Oceanic Birds Spotted in Kuwait Waters

Kuwait City, May 26 – The Kuwait Environment Protection Society (KEPS) has announced the sighting of rare oceanic bird species in Kuwaiti territorial waters during a recent monitoring expedition conducted by both Kuwaiti and international experts.

Among the notable sightings were the Short-tailed Shearwater and the Arctic Skua—species rarely seen in the region.

Mohammad Al-Hudhaina, a member of KEPS’s bird monitoring and protection team, told KUNA that this marks the fourth recorded sighting of the Short-tailed Shearwater in Kuwait. The species was previously observed in 2014, 2021, and again during this month’s expedition. Al-Hudhaina noted that this bird is known for its vast migratory range, spanning from the North Pole to the South Pole across the Pacific Ocean. He described it as being similar in size to the common gull, with a distinctive and dynamic hunting style.

Speaking about the Arctic Skua, Al-Hudhaina explained that it appears only in limited numbers during seasonal migrations. Known for its exceptional speed and agility, the Arctic Skua is often mistaken for a bird of prey due to its aggressive aerial maneuvers. He added that it is larger than the common gull and is easily identifiable while chasing seagulls and terns, as it feeds opportunistically..Stay updated on Kuwait’s latest news and job openings by following our WhatsApp channel!https://whatsapp.com/channel/0029VaCkXo25q08jnKrRwo27

“These observations confirm that Kuwait is an important environmental stop along the migratory paths of seabirds,” he said.

The bird monitoring team included Kuwaiti experts Abdulrahman Al-Sarhan, Omar Al-Shaheen, and Hamoud Al-Shaiji, along with European ornithologists Peter Alfre (UK), Vincent Legrand, and Julien Hainaut (Belgium), whose collaboration contributed to the success of the voyage.
